Volker Born, Team Leader Quality Engineering

Volker Born works as a team leader in quality engineering at Sensirion AG in Stäfa. He is a big fan of rhythm & blues and loves to spend his vacation time in Thailand.

Volker Born joined the Sensirion team as a Quality Engineer in 2009. At the time, Volker, who has a doctorate in physics, was one of three people in the Quality Management department and took the opportunity to co-develop the Quality Management at Sensirion. Today, the department has 13 staff. Volker is holding the position of team leader since 2012 and supervises four co-workers.

As team leader for Quality Engineering, Volker works in the field of quality assurance and shares responsibility for the quality of production processes and product enhancement. This begins with the analysis and determination of causes of customer complaints of all types. Volker evaluates and discusses possible remedial measures in collaboration with different departments. For Volker and his colleagues, complaints always yield insights that they can apply in a variety of ways to optimize and enhance products and processes. These include internal and customer audits, where Volker uses this acquired knowledge to evaluate process usefulness and compliance with standards. In this way, he also assists other departments, such as Research & Development. Another important aspect of Volker's job as team leader is management of the team. He is the contact person for his co-workers and engages with them in weekly meetings. Finally, he also works on various small projects, such as building the company's analytical capabilities. Part of this, inter alia, is the optimization of processes in the laboratory and the development of analytical options.

In Volker's view, there has been a great deal of activity and development in the area of Quality Management at Sensirion since 2009. A dedicated complaints system was set up,

with a complaints procedure, and contact with customers regulated. In addition to the corrective measures, important aspects such as the management and assessment of complaints play a big role in Sensirion's success today. Thus, the effectiveness of various processes and the error rate of all products can be continuously evaluated and optimized. "Today, we have advanced Quality Management to the point that in customer audits there are practically no longer any deviations within the complaints system," says Volker with pride.

"I am proud to have successfully co-developed the Quality Management department at Sensirion."

And Volker has no grounds for complaint at Sensirion. "I appreciate the open, supportive atmosphere. I can approach anyone and count on their support," he says. The work is also interesting as he has contact with all the various areas and takes an active role in shaping the company. Whether he's dealing with defective products or establishing and optimizing processes, Volker plays an active part in the functioning of Quality Management at Sensirion.
