Water Activity Measurement aW
Monitoring of crucial oil systems
In an oil insulated transformer, oil is a crucial component as it helps with heat dissipation and electrical insulation. Transformer oil is designed to withstand high voltage stresses. Increased water activity risks electrical discharge and can therefore lead to total failure of a transformer.
Hydraulic oil is designed to withstand high pressure and temperatures. An increase in water activity can have several negative impacts such as corrosion or changes in the viscosity of the oil. This could not only lead to a less efficient power transmission but also damage the hydraulic system components.
Water activity does not have a direct effect on the properties of lubricant oil. However, water contamination in a lubricant oil system can contribute to rust, corrosion, and other mechanical problems. It is important to ensure that lubricant oil is kept clean and dry to prevent these issues which could lead to increased friction and thus faster worn-out parts.
